One Day River Birding Expedition & Tour of the First Spanish Coastal Settlement in the Americas

This one day tour is for the hobbyist as well as the serious birders. A knowledgeable local bilingual guide will assist you in spotting the many species of birds found along the Rio Huitzilapan (“Hummingbird River” in Nahuatl).

You may see Parrots, Kingfishers, Black skimmers, Roseate Spoonbill, Mexican Sheartail, Bumblebee Humingbird, Black-headed Trogons, and common shorebirds to name a few.

Who knows, you may be able to add to your Lifer List as you hunt for the endemic as well as migratory birds who inhabit and visit the area in this beautiful tropical river and seaside setting. Later, you will tour the first coastal colonial town established by the Spanish Conquistadors in the each 1500’s. See the itinerary for more details.

You will be picked up at your hotel in Veracruz or Boca del Rio for a short 30 minute early morning drive to the river where you will board a small launch with your local professional bilingual guide. For the next 2-3 hours you will slowing float down the river to the Gulf of México and back all the while spotting the many birds found along the riverbanks, in the air, in the trees, and near the ocean. With a birding guide book in hand, your local guide will point out the photos of the birds your are seeing.

Afterwards, you will have breakfast at a local restaurant and then take a tour of the town of La Antigua. In 1519, Hernán Cortéz and his Spanish Conquistadors landed here and built the first coastal municipality as well as one of the first Catholic churches on the North American continent. You will get to visit this church and the remains of the early 16th century customs house. You will also have the opportunity to visit the small market place in town. Later in the early afternoon, you will be driven back to your hotel.
