About Veracruz

Veracruz is an elongated state located on the east coast of Mexico. You can find everything from steamy jungles, vast green sunlit valleys, beautiful beaches on the Gulf, lush vegetation, roaming cattle, sleepy villages, mid-sized cities, and even snow-capped mountains. The 3rd tallest mountain in North America (Pico de Orizaba,18,400') is found here.

Fishing, oil, cattle ranching, coffee farming, tobacco, and sugar cane are some of the bigger industries in Veracruz. As you can see, tourism did not even make the list . . . at least not yet. Tourism is still at its infancy here. This is a good thing for all travellers who like to experience the "natural-side" of a country.

History can be found in many places in Veracruz. Small to big Meso-American Indian ruins are scattered throughout the state with remnants of the mighty Aztecs, the Toltecas, Totonacas, and the ancient Olmec people. More recent history includes the Spanish invasion by Hernando Cortes in 1519. He landed with his army in what is now the city of Veracruz and eventually colonized many parts of the Americas. Even U.S
forces landed here and fought their way to Mexico City in the Mexican-American War of 1846-48.

In Veracruz, you have the original descendents or native population and then those who arrived on colonial ships long ago. You will also find an Afro-Caribbean influence which dates back to the slave trade era. Much of their music reflects this culture. Of course, you will find a Spanish influence with its colonial architecture in many towns and cities.
Just about everywhere you can enjoy great seafood. Stop at a restaurant near the Gulf of Mexico and you can guarantee that your meal was caught within hours of being on your plate. Maize, beans, and fried bananas are just some of the other staples found throughout Veracruz. There is nothing like a good cup of Cafe Americano or a cold Corona beer to compliment your meal.
